The Machine Garden Control Box Upgrade

Last year visiting artists Ken Rinaldo and Amy Youngs built the Machine Garden as part of our artist in residency workshop on digital methods of artistic creation in collaboration with UMaine MFA graduate students and Dept of Art undergrads. Machine Garden is their attempt to create self reliant ecosystems using modern technology and digital methods of artistic creation.

Now it’s getting a revamped controller box being designed by Pascal Francis-Metzger, a UMaine EET PhD candidate and NMD digital prototyping and design student. Working in collaboration with the IMRC Center Metzgers new box will include a Rasberry pi to allow online monitoring and analog dials to allow more direct adjustments to the automated irrigation system.

Below is the new design mock up in Fusion 360, a software system used for digital prototype design.
